He’s heard of the flowers, witnessed Éponine tear them up in frustration when she thought she was in unrequited love with Marius, only to have them fade away when she found Cosette, who saved her in more ways than one. Seeing the flowers makes Grantaire’s heart lurch painfully, and his chest tightens.
Enjolras seems to grow angrier and angrier when the coughing starts interrupting his speeches, so much that Combeferre has to take over after pushing a glass of water towards him, and he casts the flowers to the ground, glaring at them.
Grantaire already pays too much attention to Enjolras, so it’s easy to spot the white petals, no matter how hard he tries to hide it.
